10GbE and Beyond: When to Upgrade Your Network Backbone

May 13, 2026 · 5 min read · Al-Gazelle

As data volumes grow, the network backbone often becomes the silent bottleneck. Knowing when to upgrade keeps performance ahead of demand.

Signs you need more

If your servers, storage or uplinks are saturating gigabit links, if backups crawl, or if you're aggregating many access switches, your backbone is the constraint. Virtualisation and high-density Wi-Fi push this further.

Planning the upgrade

Upgrade the core and server connections to 10GbE (or 25/40/100GbE for demanding environments) first, then work outward. Plan transceivers and fibre to match.

Future-proofing

Choose switches with higher-speed uplinks even if you don't use them yet. Al-Gazelle supplies switching and transceivers across every speed tier.
